Holiday Lights Photo Tour

Alexandria

I tried night photography for the first time on a Holiday Lights Tour last Sunday. My hands were numb, even with gloves on, so I can’t say that I put a lot of effort into it, but I did take away a few tips.

I learned that I don’t need to shoot strictly in manual mode. National Geographic photographers shoot in aperture- or shutter-priority mode; if they didn’t, they’d miss the shot. It’s a relief to know that it doesn’t have to be so complicated.

I also created light trails for the first time, with the use of a tripod (see the left side of the image below). The lights are created by the King Street Trolley passing by.

I’m excited to try more when the weather warms up.
